Cyber Security Expertise - Where Should You Begin?

Whether SEC301 Intro to Cyber Security or SEC401 Security Essentials - Network, Endpoint & Cloud is right for you, depends on your prior knowledge.

Authored byKeith Palmgren
Keith Palmgren

Prospective students often ask which course is the right starting point for them on their way toward cyber security expertise. Deciding between  SEC301: Introduction to Cyber Security™ or SEC401: Security Essentials - Network, Endpoint & Cloud™, really comes down to your prior knowledge.

SEC301: Introduction to Cyber Security

SEC401: Security Essentials - Network, Endpoint & Cloud

If you have basic computer skills:

    • Send/Receive email and attachments
    • Create and print documents
    • Internet searches - Google, etc
    • Make purchases from an e-commerce site
    • Know basic computer terminology

If you already have basic IT skills:

  • Convert binary and hexadecimal
    • Default gateway
    • LAN, WLAN
    • WiFi and Bluetooth
  • Basic virtualization skills
  • Know basic cyber security terminology

While there is overlap in content between SEC301 and SEC401, they approach concepts differently. SEC301 defines and explains many of the terms and acronyms found in the field. SEC401 assumes you already know most, if not all, of them. For examples of these cybersecurity terms, check out my ABCs of Cybersecurity. You can watch Keith's and Bryan's full presentation here:
